Faults do appear and are part of our every day lives. The human error aspect accounts for a very high proportion of faults and can lead to damaging results. We have found that the skill of fault finding is an increasingly diminishing skill set and very few technicians either understand or wish to understand the principle of operation of components or the first principles of the installation. Added to this is the evolving nature of technology whereby the need to fault find is reduced as components become multi-functional. Replacing one component can remove more than one fault, however, that is too often the rationale or justification for mere replacement of parts at extra cost to the client. Incidentally, I still have a prevailing problem in my house whereby the “specialist” trade rationale was to replace the working parts systematically and so necessarily “fix” the problem in so doing. I still have the problem needless to say and multiple new parts yet the problem still exists!
